Why Science Education Can’t Wait: Filling the Gap with Supportive Learning

In today’s educational landscape, the emphasis on Reading and Math often leaves little room for science education, even though it is crucial for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 27% of 8th-grade students and 27% of 4th-grade students were performing at or above the proficient level in science during the 2022 assessment—a decline from previous years. In fact, the average science score for 8th graders decreased by 2 points from 2019, and the average score for 4th graders dropped by 3 points. This gap highlights an urgent need for science education to be prioritized and expanded in school systems across the country.

At I byDesign Academy, we recognize that while school hours may be limited, the need for science education should not be. Our school-based science programs are designed to support students by providing the additional learning opportunities they need to thrive in this area. In the classroom, analytical writing and critical thinking in non-fiction genres are often insufficiently supported due to the limited time dedicated to academic content areas like science.

Our after-school programs give students the chance to engage in hands-on, real-world science activities that encourage curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. Through these activities, students can apply their analytical skills, improve their ability to communicate ideas clearly—through speaking and writing—and strengthen their problem-solving abilities.

We understand that the modern classroom may not have the time to fully dive into science—especially when Reading and Math take center stage. That’s where our programs step in. We’re not replacing the school’s curriculum but enhancing it, providing extra support where it’s needed most. Science is a critical component of tomorrow’s workforce, and the gap in students' science knowledge will only grow without intentional action.

We’re here to help fill that gap, giving students the tools they need to succeed, think analytically, and become the innovative problem-solvers of the future. The future of science depends on the education we provide today. By prioritizing science, we empower students to develop the skills that will help them succeed in an ever-evolving world. With our after-school programs, students get the support they need to catch up, keep up, and excel.
